THERE was a telling detail in the accounts of the deaths of three failed asylum-seekers who jumped to their deaths from a 31-storey-high Glasgow tower-block early on Sunday morning a fortnight ago. Before they jumped, they threw out a wardrobe to break through the netting that covered their 15th-floor balcony. It was widely reported that this had been erected to prevent suicides, though later reports said that it was there to deter pigeons. It is to be hoped that the nets are more successful ...
