Slavery goes to the core of the curriculum
TEACHING about the transatlantic slave trade is to be made compulsory in schools, writes Margaret Holness. It is to be a core component of the history curriculum, the Government announced last week. The initiative was welcomed by Churches Together in England which has established a project, Set All Free, to mark the bicentenary this year of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act.

Tory MP deselected in ‘coup’
SIR PATRICK CORMACK, a member of the General Synod from 1995 to 2005, was not readopted by the South Staffordshire constituency association as its Conservative MP on Monday, after narrowly losing a secret vote. Sir Patrick, aged 67, has been MP for South Staffordshire since 1974; he said he was the victim of a coup.

Timely reminder: the Archbishop of York, Dr Sentamu, laying a wreath at a service in Westminster Abbey last Sunday to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the martyrdom of Archbishop Janini Luwum. The Archbishop was killed during President Amin’s regime in Uganda

Vicar suspended after allegation
A NORTH Yorkshire incumbent, the Revd David King, Vicar of Middle Esk Moor, has been suspended under the Clergy Discipline Measure 2003. The move follows newspaper reports of an alleged affair between him and Tracy Byrne, a married mother of four and care-home manager. Mr King has denied the allegations, and has described his relationship as “at all times professional”. The Archdeacon of Cleveland, the Ven. Paul Ferguson, said that suspension was a neutral act, “and doesn’t imply any conclusions about the outcome”.

Oak Hill tutor gets top job
The Revd Dr Michael Ovey, aged 48 and a tutor at Oak Hill College, Southgate, London, since 1998, teaching Christian Doctrine and Apologetics, has been appointed the college’s Principal. Dr Ovey, a lawyer, trained for ordination at Ridley Hall, Cambridge, and is co-author of Pierced for our Transgressions on penal substitution. He will take over from the Revd Dr David Peterson, who returns this summer to Australia, where he formerly taught at Moore College, Sydney.


Hannah Cooke
Girl power: Hannah Cooke, a youth-and-community worker in Cheltenham, is to be an Anglican delegate to the 51st UN Commission on the Status of Women, in New York, at the end of this month. This year’s theme is “the elimination of all forms of discrimination and violence against the girl child”
Gritters clear road for funeral
LOCAL-AUTHORITY WORKERS, gritting the roads during last week’s snows, took a detour to St Andrew’s, Allensmore, off the main road between Hereford and Abergavennny, to clear the way for a funeral. Snowdrifts had threatened to block the way for mourners attending the funeral of Rose Evans. “It was such a kind thing for them to do,” said Canon Maureen Palmer, who took the service.
