Three score years and ten

by Margaret Duggan

Ely

A FORMER Archdeacon of Ely, the Ven. John Long, recently celebrated 70 years — a biblical lifetime — in the ministry. He graduated from Queens’ College, Cambridge, in 1935, was ordained soon after, and served as a Naval Chaplain in the Second World War.

After the war, he did a spell as domestic chaplain to Archbishop Geoffrey Fisher, before moving into parochial work in Canterbury, Portsmouth, and eventually Ely, where he was Archdeacon from 1970 to 1981, before retiring to Girton.

The present Bishop of Ely, Dr Anthony Russell (pictured with the Archdeacon), joined his friends and family at Girton to congratulate him on his lifetime of service.
